Last week on Top Chef Season 16, the final four chefs had the final Quickfire Challenge of the season and it was a stinky one! They were tasked with creating a dish using the durian, a delicacy in China but a very smelly fruit! Michelle won the challenge for the second week in a row. For the Elimination Challenge, they had to fuse their own heritage with Chinese ingredients and had surprise visits from family members to help them! In the end, there was not enough fusion with the Chinese ingredients for Michelle and she was eliminated, again!
Who wins tonight on Top Chef 2019? We made our predictions earlier today, so check them out while we find out in our Live Recap that follows!

Here we go…
Their Journeys
The chefs arrive at MGM Theater and they sit down and on the big screens, they get to watch their each individual journey this season. It’s cool to catch up and see some of the moments from this season.
The Final Challenge
Padma Lakshmi and Tom Colicchio join them on stage and for this final challenge, they will be cooking the best four-course meal of their lives. Of course, they get some help from eliminated chefs. They will get to choose two sous chefs and drew knives to pick.
- Kelsey – Brandon and Nini
- Eric – Justin and Michelle
- Sara – Eddie and David
They will get 30 minutes to plan their menu and then 3 hours to shop. The next day, they will have six hours to prep and cook. However, only two of them get to serve the full four courses. As it turns out, they will serve their first course 2 hours into prep for Padma, Tom, Graham and Nilou. The two chefs that impress them the most will move on and one chef will be eliminated!
Meal Planning and Shopping
In planning, Sara has decided that she does not want one of her courses to be dessert. It’s a risk, but will it pay off. Kelsey is glad to have Brandon and Nini as her sous chefs, as they have a ton of knowledge for Chinese cuisine and that helps with shopping.
Time To Meal Prep
The chefs head to the kitchen and get started on their meal prep, which includes that first course dish for the judges to taste and see who moves on! They put the finishing touches on those first course dishes, as the judges are arriving.
Tasting
The judges are there and time to taste these dishes on Top Chef Kentucky 2019:
- Sara – Graham said she showed a lot of skill. Tom said a lot of good things here. Nilou said the texture is grainy.
- Kelsey – Padma said she loved it. Tom said it’s kind of dated. Nilou wanted more flavor.
- Eric – Graham said that it’s true he stayed true to his vision. He does not taste beef.
Results
The judges discussed the dishes and they said two were better than the third and have their answers! The chef eliminated at this point in the competition is Eric, which means that Kelsey and Sara are moving on to the full four-course meal!
It looks like we will have a female winner this season, huh? The ladies will go back and have four more hours to prep and then two more hours the next day and then they will serve their finale meal!
Their Final Night
Kelsey and Sara are friends, so they get to enjoy the final night together. They start by shotgunning beers in the hotel, so Southern through and through! Then they head over to Aji and enjoy dinner together, as they get an amazing dinner cooked for them!
Tasting
The final day has arrived and it looks like the chefs will be serving and cooking at separate times. Kelsey will go first and then Sara will come in and cook. The judges have all arrived and time for the tasting to begin!
- Kelsey – For the first course, they said they were pleasantly surprised and the cornbread was done right. It was light and refreshing. Maybe too nuanced, but liking all the textures. For the second course, they said this dish puts a smile on their face. This is one of the best dishes they have eaten this year. For the third course, the crab was not as crispy as it should be. There was too much acid in the beans and needed to be cooked more. For the final course, Padma said it is a beautiful love letter to peaches and cream. Nilou said the ice cream melting took over some of the elements of the dishes. Tom said this is appropriate and it’s pushing the envelope and she did a great job.
- Sara – For the first course, Tom said it’s even better today. The shrimp is perfectly cooked. She did a great job and they wanted some more. A huge kick in the door for Sara. For the second course, Nilou said the bacon is incredibly salty. Dan Hong liked it and he didn’t think the salt took over and it was balanced to him. Tom said it wasn’t that salty but it’s screaming for something green. For the third course, Padma said the duck was beautiful. Tom said they need more of that pickled beet. For the final course, she is actually not serving dessert, which I am intrigued to see the judges’ responses to that! They said this was her strongest dish. The sauce brought it all together and the cooking on the steak was perfect. They did not miss dessert at all and this was a mic drop moment!
Judges’ Table
For both the chefs, they had positives and negatives for all their dishes. They leave it up in the air, but Tom did say that Sara’s final dish was near perfection. Can you not give her the win after saying that? Time will tell!
Results
The judges discussed all of the dishes one more time and they have picked a winner. The winner of Top Chef Season 16 is Kelsey!
