The Final 4 have arrived and it is the last Quickfire Challenge of the season. They must create an elevated burger and Doug is feeling confident, since one of his restaurants makes ones of the best burgers in the country. Jennifer wants to keep the ratio of bun to burger even. David has also made an award-winning burger, but he doesn’t have time to make it today. Bryan is a purist when it comes to burgers and he keeps building it as he goes along. Doug screws up his burger and he knows he is not winning!
Time runs up and the critic tonight is no other than Sang Yoon, the chef eliminated last week on Top Chef Masters 2013! The chefs are all worried, since they sent him packing last week. For David, they said it is a strange combination, but they like it. For Jennifer, she used ketchup and Sang actually liked it! For Bryan, he said the flavors are classic and the meat looks like a meatloaf. For Doug, the shrimp disappears.
Results: least favorite burgers are for Doug (shrimp was spongey) and Bryan (texture was meatloaf-like). Favorite dishes are for Jennifer (enjoyed smokiness) and David (sounds disgusting, but it played well with the acid in the apples). The winning burger goes to Jennifer, so $5,000 for her charity and a total of $35,000 for the season! She has won every challenge since she came back from the Battle of the Sous Chefs!
We find out the results from the Battle of the Sous Chefs and Bryan’s sous chef won him immunity and he has earned a spot in the finale of Top Chef Masters Season 5 next week!
Elimination Challenge: they serve a four course meal for teachers at the L.A. Unified School District. They will each be responsible for one dish for the dinner. The chefs sit down to discuss the dinner and Jennifer is excited for this meal. She is going to make duck. David wants to make souffle for dessert, which Doug said takes titanium balls to take on 60 souffles!
The chefs go do some shopping and Jennifer is getting more and more nervous about things, but it seems to be working for her? They arrive back in the kitchen and they have three hours to cook their dishes. Bryan starts cleaning the squid, which is going to take him an hour to graduate. Everyone is moving along, but over an hour in and Bryan is still cleaning.
Less than an hour to serving and the squid is clean and David is pushing to get his souffles done! The guests are starting to arrive, as are the critics. The teachers don’t know that four of them will be honored with a dish for them. As we meet the teachers, we see the chefs struggle to get all the dishes done back in the kitchen. Doug is trying to put his dish together and uses the help of David!
Time for service on Top Chef Masters 2013 and Doug is up first. He brought a dozen roses for his teacher, but gives one to the special student whose family nominated her and it is a special moment. For his dish, they said it is so luxurious. They said it feels like a celebration, but Curtis Stone said it is rich on rich on rich.
For Bryan’s dish, they said the texture of the pasta is so good it makes them want to cry. They said he took a difficult and odd dish and made it so relatable.
For Jennifer’s dish, Doug thought the lamb was a little too rare, but she liked the cook on it. The judges said the lamb is undercooked. They love the porridge, even with the imperfections. The teacher, who lost her mother in 2010 and always made her lamb. She has not had lamb since then and this meant a lot to her.
For David’s dish, they think the souffle doesn’t have the springiness of a normal souffle. They like that he took on such a big dish in the amount of time he had. The judges think it will be very hard to pick a winner tonight on Top Chef Masters 2013.
Critics’ Table and they want to see all four of them. Doug and Bryan has the favorite dishes of the night. The critics seemed to enjoy both of the dishes and had positive things to say, but the winning dish goes to Bryan! This is his first win and he gets $10,000 for his charity. Both have earned a spot in the finale, even though Bryan had immunity.
Jennifer and David have the worst dishes. They think the pork was undercooked for Jennifer, but they liked all the components on the plate. David gets credit for taking on 60+ souffles, but the texture was borderline soggy. The critics discuss and the chef that is eliminated on Top Chef Masters 2013 tonight is David!
That means that Bryan, Doug and Jennifer will be battling in the Top Chef Masters Season 5 finale next week!
