Top Chef Masters 2013 Live Recap: Episode 8 – Lucha Vavoom

It looks like the chefs may be in danger tonight on Top Chef Masters 2013, especially host Curtis Stone, as the chefs take part in an Elimination Challenge on Top Chef Masters Season 5 which has them cooking meals for the wrestlers of Lucha Vavoom! Body slams for Curtis Stone, anyone? We are down to five chefs on Top Chef Masters 2013, so the time is winding down on this season already! Last week on Top Chef Masters Season 5, we saw Jennifer and Sue battle it out with their sous chefs for a chance back in the Top Chef Masters Kitchen. Jennifer won out and returned for another chance at winning money for her charity. It was a good thing, as she survived the cut and we saw Neal head home on Top Chef Masters 2013!

Besides creating the dishes with a Mexican flair for the wrestlers, the chefs will also face a Quickfire Challenge that is designed by one of their own! The winning sous chef from Battle of the Sous Chefs will join his chef and create the Quickfire Challenge. How hard will they be on their fellow competitors? Find out in our LIve Recap that follows!

The chefs walk into the kitchen and some guy is playing the accordion! It is the Quickfire Challenge and the chef whose sous chef won the Battle of the Sous Chefs will decide the challenge. It is Douglas’ sous chef, so they get to come up with it. They have ten minutes to come up with their own challenge!

Sang does not allow ketchup in his restaurant, so Doug and his sous chef decide to make the challenge of creating a dish that features ketchup! He is now determined to beat Doug at his own game. Bryan said he has never done anything like this. Jennifer is feeling like she is in the boy’s club and joking around, but she flies under the radar and feels she is being underestimated.

The time runs up and judging: Doug is not feeling confident with his dish, even though he chose the ingredient. They said they could taste the anger in Sang’s dish. The guest judge tonight is irritating all the chefs and even seems to be annoying host Curtis Stone. 

The bad dishes: Doug and David. The best dishes: Sang, Jennifer and Bryan. The favorite dish of the night goes to Jennifer on Top Chef Masters 2013 and $5,000 for her charity!

Elimination Challenge: Doug has immunity this week for his sous chef winning and Sang and Jennifer has the losing sous chefs, so an obstacle will be heading their way. In walk the wrestlers from Lucha Vavoom and they will be creating a two-item Mexican menu for 300 guests!

Jennifer is worried about creating that many dishes and having a penalty added on. They have three hours today and one hour of prep time tomorrow. They will be working with their sous chefs though.

The chefs head out and do some shopping and head back to the kitchen and are excited to work with their sous chefs, even if they may have given them penalties tonight on Top Chef Masters 2013! Doug is feeling safety with having immunity, but he always likes having his sous chef their to give orders and not be worried.

David was a wrestler back in high school, so he feels at home with this one. Sang is making one of his sous chef’s dishes. Doug is making some kind of cocktail and the other chefs feel he is taking it easy and just trying to get the crowd drunk! The pressure cook is not working for Sang and it could ruin his pork, which would ruin his dish!

The next day arrives on Top Chef Masters Season 5 and Jennifer and Sang find out their penalties. For having the worst dishes, the sous chefs will switch places and work with the other losing chef! This could be huge, especially since Sang was depending on his sous chef for their dish! They now have one hour to prep!

They may have switched sous chefs, but Sang is still calling out for the help from his sous chefs! Bryan is feeling confident with his dish and thinks it is a winning dish. The time runs out and time for the guests to arrive and the serving to begin!

The 300 guests have arrived and there is a wide variety of guests in that audience! The critics have arrived on Top Chef Masters 2013. They get some entertainment and David is liking the female dancer, which turns out to be a guy!!! Too funny!

Tasting the dishes and David is first. Curtis said it doesn’t look like a quesadilla. It has some kick to it. The olives overwhelmed them.

For Bryan, they thought the poached shrimp was under-poached. They were cleaning the plate on his second dish, so he might be good to go tonight. For Jennifer, they thought it was flavored beautifully and didn’t overwhelm the fish. They loved the second dish and she may be the winner again tonight.

For Sang, they thought it didn’t taste Mexican and this was a Mexican challenge. They thought it was tender, but a lot of salt! For Douglas, they were thinking he skated around a second dish with his bloody margarita. They loved his second dish though, but his drink could hurt him on Top Chef Masters 2013!

Time for the Critics’ Table: Curtis Stone comes out and they want to see all five of the chefs remaining. Jennifer and Sang joke about trading sous chefs. The favorite dishes come tonight from Jennifer and Bryan. They thought Jennifer’s dishes were well-balanced and were stunned at how she got so much flavor in there with so little time. They told Bryan he was brave for serving beef to a crowd of 300. The winning chef tonight, and for the sweep tonight, is Jennifer and she gets $10,000 for her charity!

The other chefs had the worst dishes, but Doug has immunity tonight and he will be safe. It is down to Sang and David and Sang doesn’t seem to take critiques very well, right? They thought Sang’s dish was too salty and didn’t feel like he didn’t give it his all. They didn’t think David’s dish was a quesadilla and more a flauta and the olives overwhelmed them.

So, who will be eliminated tonight on Top Chef Masters 2013? The critics discuss and we will find out who made the Final 4 on Top Chef Masters Season 5! The eliminated chef tonight is Sang! I am shocked, but he has struggled the past few weeks.
