Top Chef Masters 2013 Live Recap: Episode 3 – Soap Opera Challenge

Things are about to get real dramatic tonight on Top Chef Masters 2013, as the remaining chefs will be put to the test of creating dishes inspired by the soap opera Days of Our Lives. All soap operas have three themes: sex, greed and murder, so their dishes have to fit into those themes. The cast of Days of Our Lives will be there to help the dishes the chefs come up with on Top Chef Masters Season 5. Last week on Top Chef Masters 2013, the chefs were put to the test of taking an American classic dish and putting an Asian twist on it. The critics were not impressed with the bread choice by Jenn Louis and it seemed to take over the dish. She tried to put a twist on the BLT, but the judges also never saw the real twist in the dish. That led to them sending her home on Top Chef Masters Season 5.

Besides the soap opera challenge tonight on Top Chef Masters 2013, we get to see the chefs take on a Quickfire Challenge that will feature them making dishes from the scraps their sous chefs didn’t use in the Battle of the Sous Chefs. Scraps to make a dish??? Here we go…we start with the Quickfire Challenge and the chefs will use the scraps from the sausage challenge on Battle of the Sous Chefs. They have 30 minutes to create a dish and all out of scraps!

The chefs are not happy with how much (or lack thereof) of meat they have left. Sang’s sous chef used most of the pork, so he is struggling. Douglas didn’t get much meat, but he is determined to win some money for the dogs! Lynn comes from a family of butchers and thinks she can handle this challenge….if she had meat to work with! The time runs out and Bryan is happy with his dish.

The judges come in and they think Neal has some incredible flavors. They enjoyed the pairing on Douglas’ dish, but a lot of fat on the duck. They thought Lynn’s dish was very rich. Sue’s dish is dry and not very fatty. Bryan’s dish was moist. They wanted more salt in David’s dish. They thought Sang’s dish was so simple compared to everyone else and it was ballsy, but so good.

Worst dishes: Lynn (it was one-dimensional) and Sue (pork was dry). Best dishes: Neal, Douglas and Sang. They thought the most creative use of the scraps was Sang and another victory for him and his charity on Top Chef Masters 2013!

Elimination Challenge: they will be cooking for the cast of Days of Our Lives. They have to create dishes based on sex, greed and murder. The chefs each get a theme. Lynn’s sous chef won the battle, so she wins immunity (her sous chef said she is the queen of sausage and I giggled). They all get in their teams, but they are competing against the chefs in their own theme! The cast of Days will decide the winners and which chef on each team will be up for elimination on Top Chef Masters Season 5.

The chefs go out shopping and get the ingredients for their dishes. The next day arrives and the chefs start their meals. The losing chefs from the Battle of the Sous Chefs will face a time penalty, but we find that out later. The penalty is a 30-minute penalty and Bryan is the first one to get it.

Franklin now has to be in a “coma” for a half hour! Odette is making her signature ravioli dish for the murder theme. Sang is the last one to serve his sentence and he must sit a half hour in the “crime scene.” The chefs are all working on their dishes, but Sang’s time is up and now he is trying to catch up.

The cast and judges arrive as the chefs are finishing up their plates. Sang is a hot mess as the time runs up and he did not get everything on his plate. He may have been winning all the challenges, but is not finishing his plate the death of Sang on Top Chef Masters 2013???

The first dishes come from Jennifer (Murder), Odette (Murder) and Sang (Murder). For Jennifer, they said clever presentation and one of the most original duck dishes they’ve had. For Odette, they said the presentation was as bland as the taste. For Sang, the chicken skin is intensely salty and didn’t get the theme of murder.

For the sex dishes, we have Franklin, Neal, David and Lynn. For Franklin, they loved the dish and love foreplay and it was a sexual appearance. For Neal, the red snapper was overwhelmed by the sauce and it was not sexy. For David, there is too much going on. For Lynn, it was a interesting concept, but too rich.

For the greed dishes on Top Chef Masters 2013, we have Bryan, Sue and Douglas. For Bryan, the shrimp is salty and they were tired of eating it. For Sue, they had something to enjoy in every bote. For Douglas, they did not like what Doug made and the sauce was confusing. They were all over the place on these dishes!

The cast places their votes and time to find out who will be up for elimination tonight on Top Chef Masters 2013!

The votes have been tallied and the favorite dishes come from Sue, Jennifer and Franklin. The winning dish and winner of $10,000 for their charity is Jennifer! The least favorite dishes come from Douglas, Lynn and Odette. Lynn has immunity, so she has nothing to worry about! Doug or Odette will be going home then!

Time for Critics’ Table on Top Chef Masters 2013: they didn’t like the combination of tastes in Lynn’s dish. Odette’s dish lacked flavor and the egg yolk inside shocked some of the diners and Doug’s dish was overly seasoned and never achieved that balance. It was her signature dish and it was not good, so Odette was sent home tonight! Douglas and Lynn are safe.
