The Sing Off 2013 Live Recap: Premiere – A Cappella Is Back! (VIDEO)
| December 9, 2013 at 8:00 PM ESTWe have the return of a capella tonight on NBC, as The Sing Off 2013 makes its return after a two-year hiatus and I could not be more excited for The Sing Off Season 4. Sure, it is only a seven-night special for the holidays, but it is still back and I am excited. We have some changes coming to The Sing Off 2013, as we have a new judge and a new producer and a new format! The ten groups and 100 voices take the stage tonight on The Sing Off Season 4 premiere! Catch it with us during our The Sing Off 2013 Live Recap and see who got eliminated on The Sing Off 2013 tonight!
For the first change, we have a new judge in the mix. Gone is Sara Bareilles and in her place is Jewel, who should bring some spice to the table. Also, we have a new executive producer, as Mark Burnett brings his talents to the show. He has made it work on Survivor and The Voice, so why can’t he make it work here?
For the new format on The Sing Off Season 4, we will now have the “Ultimate Sing Off” to pit the bottom two performing groups against each other for survival. Both will perform the same song and only have minutes to prepare for it! This is going to be good, so follow along with our Live Recap starting soon!

Here we go…things kickoff with the ten groups taking the stage and performing together and showing me why I love a capella!!! The ten groups will sing their signature song tonight to wow the judges: Ben Folds, Jewel and Shawn Stockman!
Vocal Rush – “Bottom Of The River” by Delta Rae
They are the youngest group in the competition, but doesn’t want that to hurt them. They may be the youngest in the competition, but they showed some poise on that stage. It started a little slow for my liking, but it definitely kicked in and was awesome. They have some great talent in there!
Home Free – “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line
This is the first country a capella group on The Sing Off 2013. They do about 250 shows a year, but they said 10% of their lives are performing and 90% is traveling around in an RV and all the smells! These guys were very entertaining. They are having fun up there and I love seeing that. The guy with the deep voice brought a twist to it and then the lead singer hit some high notes and they finished strong!
The Princeton Footnotes – “I Knew You Were Trouble” by Taylor Swift
They are not the stuffy, Ivy League guys and are trying to bring a more contemporary, fun side to themselves. Again, this one started a little rough for me and I was not sure about them. Midway through they kicked it in and I think their personalities started to show more and more. I fell in love with them and I didn’t think I would even like them to begin with!
Calle Sol – “Pon De Replay” by Rihanna
We head to Puerto Rico for this group, which is known for their choreography as well. The four girls are dancers, so we will see a fusion of a lot of styles in this performance on The Sing Off 2013. Well, this was the first group of the night that I did not really enjoy. Their vocals were not the greatest and their dancing was nothing special. They had a few moments, but it was nothing special.
Street Corner Renaissance – “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction
They are old school and grew up singing, literally, on the street corners. They all had their careers and are back. They said this is their second chance at their first love and not going to blow it this time. Do they have the best vocals? No. Do they do all fancy dance moves? No. Are they entertaining? Yes, as they did a current song and made it their own and I am impressed.
The first five groups on The Sing-Off 2013 have performed and time for the judges to determine who automatically will move on to the next show. The four groups moving on to the next show are:
- Street Corner Renaissance
- Vocal Rush
- Home Free
- Calle Sol
That means The Princeton Footnotes are in the Ultimate Sing Off later tonight and could be eliminated!
Ten – “Tell Me Something Good” by Rufus & Chaka Khan
This group has never performed on stage together and tonight will be their first time. They have some amazing vocals and a great lead vocalist. Give them some time and they will get better, but for the first time on the stage together as a group they did well.
Element – “Burn” by Ellie Goulding
This is the only all-female group on The Sing Off 2013. They all have strong musical backgrounds. They may have a variety background, but they all love music. They had some good moments, but the lead vocals were not as great as I would want. They were trying for too high and it didn’t seem to fit for me.
VoicePlay – “Feel This Moment” by Pitbull featuring Christina Aguilera
They work together in theme parks in Orlando. They have been five guys for a long time, but added their lone lady earlier this season. They want to feel this moment, but I am not feeling it. The lead is not that good and I think the song is too big for her. They might be in the bottom tonight on The Sing Off Season 4 and going home?
The Filharmonic – “Treasure” by Bruno Mars
They like to think of themselves as a Filipino Boy Band. They are influenced by the ’90s and the Boy Bands. They take music from today and throw it back to what they grew up with. They are really good and I like them. They seem like very nice guys and very liable guys. The two leads both had great vocals and I am a fan!
The acoUstiKats – “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke
The are thought of a fraternity on campus at University of Kentucky. The guys like being able to sing to the pretty ladies. This has been such a popular song, so I was wondering how they would do and they nailed it! This was so fun to watch and they were beyond entertaining!
The second group of five have performed and it is time to get the judges’ decision on this one. The next four groups moving on to the next show of The Sing Off 2013 are:
- The Filharmonics
- Ten
- acoUstiKats
- Element
That means VoicePlay will take on The Princeton Footnotes in the Ultimate Sing Off right now! They will both perform “Bye Bye Bye” by ‘N Sync. VoicePlay had some moments that were good and fun, but I think The Princeton Footnotes did a little better on this one. Who do you think it will be?
The judges discuss both the groups and they save VoicePlay, which means The Princeton Footnotes are going home! What do you think of the decision tonight on The Sing Off 2013?
