Great Food Truck Race 2014 Recap: Season 5 Finale – The Winner Is…
| September 28, 2014 at 8:00 PM EDTWe are down to the final two teams on The Great Food Truck Race 2014 and one of them will be named the winner of The Great Food Truck Race Season 5 tonight! The teams will be heading to Tampa, Florida, to end it all and wait for Tyler Florence to hand them a check for $50,000 and the keys to their new food truck! Check it out with us during our Great Food Truck Race 2014 Recap tonight and see who won Great Food Truck Race 2014 tonight!
Last week on The Great Food Truck Race Season 5, the final three teams made their way to Mobile, Alabama, and they started the weekend with a seafood challenge. They had to try and guess 100 pounds of shrimp. The teams that came the closest would be able to keep all of that shrimp for free! Lone Star won the challenge, but then found themselves taking up too much prep time cleaning these shrimp, so the victory hurt them in a way! The teams then faced a brunch challenge from Tyler Florence, but didn’t know he had secret shoppers come up and buy their food. It was Lone Star and Let There Be Bacon winning the challenge and then Bacon winning the Cooking Challenge and getting $5,000 for their till. It didn’t matter, as they still finished on bottom and were eliminated!

Here we go…we take a look back at the different teams and their eliminations along the way. Now it is time for the finale and a chance to see Lone Star and Middle Feast battle it out. Who are you rooting for?
The teams are making their way into Tampa, Florida. Middle Feast didn’t think they’d make it this far, but they think they did everything right last week (and they did). If they can do that again, then they would win for sure tonight. They arrive in front of Tyler Florence and he tells them they are reliving everything they have learned this season. They will work on branding, which they will pick five dishes and those are the only five dishes they will serve. Tyler picks the price-point for the dishes (one $5 dish, three $10 dishes and one $15 dish). They will then head to Bonita Springs and work on marketing, which they will shoot a 30-second radio commercial for their food truck.
The teams talk and fill out their food board with the five best dishes for them this season. They are now headed to Bonita Springs and they talk about the commercial. Lone Star has their jingle, which they say people have liked, so they are going to use that. Middle Feast is unsure and not good at writing jingles, but they like the final product. Lone Star has high-energy for their radio spot.
They leave the radio station and are surprised to see Tyler waiting for them, which is never good news!!! He tells them they will revisit partnerships and be working together, but only for a few hours. He loaded their trucks up with food and will head to Naples. They will work together and the money they make will be their seed money for the final destination. I’m not liking this challenge, as it is the finale and they should be going against each other and not working together! Neither team is making much money and Tyler comes in. He combines both the tills and splits it in half. They made $369 total, so they each get $184.50 to buy groceries for the final day, which will be in Alligator Alley!
The next day arrives and Tyler tells them they are having a cooking challenge, right here, right now and will be challenged about cooking locally! They will take an air boat to get the ingredients to cook. The dish that Tyler likes best will have their seed money doubled, which is huge on The Great Food Truck Race 2014! They head out and pick up the ingredients, which are alligator and frog legs! They come back and have fresh produce and have 30 minutes to make their dish.
TASTING: For Middle Feast, he said it tastes delicious and it is the best dish he has tasted or seen come from their truck. For Lone Star, he said it is dead-on brand for them. It gets better and better and the flavors ask him to come back for more.
RESULTS: He thinks they both did well, but Middle Feast was a little better and they win the Cooking Challenge on Great Food Truck Race 2014!
They will now head to Key West for the last leg of the finale. They arrive in Key West and this is where it all comes to an end. They will go head-to-head to be named the winner of The Great Food Truck Race Season 5! They all explain why they are doing this and then Tyler said this is where they revisit time management, as they only have two days of selling and every second is crucial.
Lone Star gets their spot and heads out shopping. Middle Feast parks right down the street from them and heads out shopping as well. They are back and Lone Star prepped and is open in 20 minutes and have food going out quickly. Both teams are open and selling lots of food.
Because of the lack of money, Lone Star has sold out of their burger buns. One lady wants to take it off the menu, but the other thinks it is their most popular item. They have some tension, but decide to go with a tortilla burger and make them smaller burgers.
Time for the evening, as the trucks move spots and try to get some more sales for the day. While they had an easier time in Alabama, it seems like they are having to work to sell their food in Key West. Both trucks are closing it down for the night and neither of them are happy with their numbers for Day 1.
The final day arrives and they are starting back at the same spots they started the day before. They are both doing about the same business, but Lone Star runs out of chicken and seems to be losing a few customers to Middle Feast. Tyler calls and the selling is done! They head out to meet him and are told to bring their cashbox and the briefcase from the premiere that was in everyone’s truck and told to “Do Not Open” but it looks like they will open it tonight, huh?
RESULTS: The teams are in front of Tyler and the journey has come to an end. They turn in their cash boxes and briefcases. By a margin of $700, the winner of The Great Food Truck Race Season 5 is Middle Feast!!! I was rooting for them and predicted them to win earlier. Congrats to them!!!
