Former Contestants Talk About American Idol 2013 Racism Lawsuit
| January 27, 2013 at 2:30 PM ESTOn Friday, we wrote about a possible lawsuit against American Idol 2013 from nine former contestants who claim that the show is racist. Not only do I and most people think this claim is ridiculous, other former contestants think the claim is equally as crazy. Casey Abrams, Melinda Doolittle, Taylor Hicks and Vonzell Solomon all talked with TMZ regarding the lawsuit and shared their thoughts on American Idol 2013 spoilers. American Idol Season 12 has found a lot of ways to make it into the headlines and is this another one of their ploys?
The lawsuit against American Idol was filed by attorney James H. Freeman and included in the supposed lawsuit are Corey Clark (Season 2), Jaered Andrews (Season 2), Donnie Williams (Season 3), Terrell Brittenum (Season 5), Derrell Brittenum (Season 5), Thomas Daniels (Season 6), Akron Watson (Season 6), Ju’Not Joyner (Season 8) and Chris Golightly (Season 9). Even though representatives from American Idol 2013 have not spoken on the issue, some other former contestants have stepped up to defend the show.
On the American Idol lawsuit, Season 4 finalist Vonzell Solomon said: “I didn’t experience any of that [racial discrimination]…all of our contracts were clear about how the background checks worked and that we could be disqualified if we lied about our past.”
Season 6 finalist Melinda Doolittle disagrees with the lawsuit: “It is shocking to see such allegations. In my experience on the show, the Idol team strives to champion everyone, regardless of race. However, each contestant is explicitly told that the withholding of information that may compromise the show or artist, can and will result in immediate disqualification.”
Meanwhile, Casey Abrams and Taylor Hicks second that sentiment. Casey said, “Idol is picky, but I’m not sure about racist.” and Taylor said, “Not once did I see the show discriminate towards anyone. It’s all about the votes.”
