For Top 3 Week on American Idol Season 13, we announced the performance theme earlier in the week! This should be an interesting one, as the Top 3, again, have no say in what they will be performing. The American Idol judges 2014 (Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick, Jr.) will pick one of their songs. Mentor Randy Jackson will pick another and the final song was selected by their hometowns during their Hometown Visits on American Idol 2014! Three crucial song choices and Jena Irene, Caleb Johnson or Alex Preston had no say in what they would be. How do you think this is going to end up???

Here we go…we are celebrating the 500th episode of American Idol tonight! Caleb has been struggling with bronchitis and had no voice for dress rehearsals earlier. He has been treated by a doctor, who gave him the clear to perform tonight. We then get The Chainsmokers working the crowd with their song “Selfie.” Now to the performances on American Idol 2014:
Round 1 – Randy’s Picks
Caleb Johnson – He sings “Never Tear Us Apart” by INXS. Randy thinks this will show his bluesy side and if he can connect to it, then he will tear it up. I think we are going to hear about this injury all night, but he did still sound good on this one. I think he was holding back a little and could have gotten higher in parts, but still a solid performance.

Alex Preston – He sings “Pompeii” by Bastille. Randy thinks this is some kind of sound he might want to embody later on and it has the band sound to it. He thinks it is more up-tempo and modern. To be honest, this one started a little rough for me. He seemed to be trying to do too much with playing the guitar and drums, but he ends up kicking it in and I am a fan.
Alex Preston, Pompeii ~ American Idol Top 3 by HumanSlinky
Jena Irene – She sings “Titanium” by David Guetta. For me, this song represents Pitch Perfect and that is what I will think of when I hear this song. This is the kind of artist that Jena wants to be, but I just can’t see it. She annoys me on these type of songs. Anyone else?

Round 2 – Judges’ Picks
Caleb Johnson – He sings “Demons” by Imagine Dragons. He sang a song by this band during Hollywood Week, but the judges think this could bring out another side of him. This one was a weird one for me. I like the song and he seemed to put a slower twist on it. He has that rock sound, but this song did not allow him his normal strong rocker voice.

Alex Preston – He sings “Stay” by Rihanna. When I saw this song choice earlier today, I was very excited! Alex has been one of my favorites all season long and I think this is a perfect song choice for him. I am not sure what he is wearing, but he nails the vocals. Jennifer Lopez gets her goosies in the middle of the performance. I could honestly hear him singing this song with Rihanna and making it work!

Jena Irene – She sings “Heart Attack” by Demi Lovato. I think they are trying to make Jena a pop artist tonight and, for me, it is not working. She started weak, but got better towards the end. Second performance and I am not impressed with her tonight!

Round 3 – Hometown Picks
Caleb Johnson – He sings “Dazed and Confused” by Led Zeppelin. He thinks they picked a killer song for him to sing and thinks his hometown is awesome. He rocked it out the first time he performed it and continued it again tonight. No issues with his voice on this one and maybe just bad song choices on the first two tonight on American Idol 2014? Jennifer was up and feeling this song!

Alex Preston – He sings “Story Of My Life” by One Direction. You would think Alex taking on a boy band would be awkward, but he made it work his first time around and I am sure he will do the same tonight on American Idol 2014. I just love how he makes songs his own and he did just that with this song. One Direction who? Loved it!

Jena Irene – She sings “Creep” by Radiohead. Well, it looks like Jena has a younger, gay brother, huh? Maybe I like her a little bit more now! I will say that Jena has a unique voice and it works on some songs and not on others. Song choice is crucial for her and I was not a fan of her first two performances, but this song is perfect for her and she nailed it to end the show!
