American Baking Competition 2013 - Finale

The final three amateur bakers make their way to the kitchen and this is a huge week for them. For the Signature Bake, the bakers can make anything they want, but the peanut must be the star of the dish. Paul Hollywood said the peanut must be sophisticated, which he said is hard to do. Darlene and Brian are both making a rolled cake, but Francine is making a torte. Francine has some leftovers and Jeff Foxworthy hurries over to eat…a perk of the job, huh?

They all look amazing and I want to eat it all! The time runs out and the judges get to taste them on American Baking Competition 2013. For Darlene, Paul sort of like the appearance, but it reminds him of the ’70s. However, he loves it and she has peanuts coming through every layer of it. Marcela Valladolid said it might need a tiny bit less peanut. For Brian, Marcela said the flavor of the mousse is spectacular. Paul likes it and the sponge is baked well. For Francine, Marcela said great presentation and the flavor of the crust is nice, but it was overcooked. The flavors are not working together well. Paul said there is not flavor in the center. It seems like Brian got off to a good start tonight.

Time for the Technical Bake on The American Baking Competition on CBS and they will all be making a dozen Boston Cream Doughnuts, which happens to be Paul Hollywood’s recipe! They get all the ingredients to use, but not the complete recipe. Darlene has never fried a thing, so this is going to be a struggle for her.

The dough comes out successful for all of them and time to deep fry them, but Darlene is not sure how to fry them. They aren’t frying as well as any of them would like it, but they come out and filling them with the cream and putting the chocolate on top. He wants them glossy and Darlene knows it is vegetable oil, but the others don’t. Could that help her?

The time runs out and time for the judges to taste. For Darlene, they said they have a good color and a good tasting doughnut and uniform. Too much cream, but it tastes good. For Brian, they are flatter and not smooth. They wanted the chocolate more shiny. For Francine, it has a nice chocolate shine on top. The cream is nice and the structure is fine.

Ranking from worst to best: Brian, Francine and Darlene. That means Darlene wins the Technical Bake and that is coming from the baker who never fried a doughnut in her life!

The pressure is on and it comes down to this: the Showstopper Bake, which is to make 72 miniature desserts inspired by America’s flag. They must have 24 meringue, 24 pastries and 24 cakes! They will have a party when the bake is done with some special guests and they will all taste their desserts.

Francine starts with the meringue first, since they take the longest. Paul gives Francine a hug and Brian wants one too, but he settles for one from Jeff! The meringues are in the oven and they start on the other desserts.

Down the hill, the party has started and it is all the eliminated bakers from the season and friends and families of the final amateur bakers, who they haven’t seen in weeks! One hour left and they are working on the 24 cakes, which can be any shape they want. Darlene is reminded of her Dad with the cakes she is making and he recently passed away, so she is having a mini-breakdown thinking of him on American Baking Competition 2013. The time is running out and the cakes are all done and we now will find out who won The American Baking Competition 2013 tonight!

The judges will taste first and then the party. For Darlene, Paul said it is so sweet it is salty and such a shame. The pastry is raw inside. The sponge is lovely, but Marcela said it was an off day for her today. For Brian, they like the whole thing together. They wanted the meringue more defined. For the tarts, Marcela wanted more flavor and it was bland. For the cake, Paul said the sponge is tasty. For Francine, Marcela said it looks beautiful. Paul said the texture is wrong for the meringue, but Marcela likes the flavor. The pastry is not baked long enough. Paul loves the flavor and texture of the cake.

Paul and Marcela will go discuss the bakers and determine a winner, but the bakers head to the party! Bring on the tears, as they are reunited with their families! Brian annoyed me at the very beginning, but he has grown on me. Anyone else?

The judges are torn on who to pick and it could be anyone’s to take home. They have made a decision and the winner of The American Baking Competition 2013 is Brian! He wins $250,000 and a cookbook deal. I am not as mad as I thought I would be, but I like Francine from the beginning.

What do you think of the judges’ choice tonight?
