American Baking Competition 2013 Recap: Episode 5 – Desserts Week
| June 27, 2013 at 1:05 AM EDTThe amateur bakers on The American Baking Competition 2013 have been going along nicely this season, but with six bakers left we are going to see even more stiff competition on American Baking Competition on CBS tonight. Judges Paul Hollywood and Marcela Valladolid will be putting them to the test this week with desserts! Host Jeff Foxworthy isn’t goingto be complaining though! Can they top Bred Week last week? Find out during our American Baking Competition 2013 Recap and see who was named Star Baker on The American Baking Competition Season 1 tonight with us!
The amateur bakers enter the kitchen and Effie is hoping to improve over last week, where she ended up in the bottom. James is hoping to be Star Baker and stand out from the others as only six of them remain.
They will start with the Signature Bake tonight and it will be to make eight individual custards. Marcela said a custard is a liquid thickened by eggs. Paul said there is only on ingredient (custard) so there is no where to hide if they screw it up. Effie feels she has not done her best on The American Baking Competition 2013, so she is doing two sauces for this bake and hoping that will help her stand out.
Francine is making her Mom’s recipe and Jeff asks her what her mom would think of her making it on the show and she shows some emotion. Darlene is coming off being named Star Baker, so she wants to keep the momentum going. Elaine is making a Corn and Crab Custard, so she will standout against all the other sweet custards.
The time is running out and Effie is worried about how her custards will come out, even though her sauce is perfect. They do not set in the time and they are complete liquid, so the big chance she took is not paying off on American Baking Competition 2013. James’ custard doesn’t have enough time to cool, so he hopes it doesn’t melt the whipped cream.
Time is up and the judges will taste them. For Darlene, Marcela said it is beautiful and Paul said it is delicious and really good. For Francine, Paul said the top should not be like that and it is a bit eggy and Marcela said it is grainy. For James, Marcela said the custard looks really nice and would have left the whipped cream off and Paul loves it, but the display is terrible. For Elaine, Paul loves the flavor, but Marcela said she had too much liquid and the egg cooked. For Brian, they said it looked dry and Marcela said it is overcooked, even though he was sure she would love it. For Effie, Paul said the taste is phenomenal, but the challenge was to make a custard and this is a soup.
Time for the Technical Bake on American Baking Competition on CBS, which they receive the ingredients, but only part of the recipe. They will be making chocolate soufflé, but since it needs to be eaten right away they will start at staggered times. Brian gets things started. Francine is in next and soufflé is her kryptonite and she has never made one that works.
Brian has a thick dough, but Francine has a very liquidy one and Brian thinks it is a mistake. James is going to have a battle with this one. Brian is liking his and how puffy it is, but at the same time he takes it out of the oven then Darlene says you can’t take it out of the oven because once you do it will fall because of the change in temperature. He has a flat soufflé and he is not happy! Effie notices as soon as she put her soufflé in that she forgot the sugar!!! She is now screwed on this one too. It is not looking good for Effie tonight on The American Baking Competition 2013!
With the staggered judging, the judges return and Brian is up first, but they have no idea whose soufflé is whose. Marcela said it taste like eggs and Paul said it did not mix well. For Francine, they said it is beautiful in the center and the flavor is great. For Elaine, they said the flavor is fantastic, but it was three minutes from perfection. For Darlene, they said it has good color and it is nice. For James, they said it has a nice chocolate flavor and a good bake on it. For Effie, she knows it will not work out because of the no sugar, so she sends it to them to end the misery. The judges say it is raw inside and inconsistent and it is really bitter and a very bad soufflé!
For the rankings, from worst to best: Brian, Effie (she beat Brian even without sugar), Francine, Darlene, Elaine and James. He wins the Technical Bake, even though he has never made it before and thought he was in for a big battle!
Time for the Showstopper on American Baking Competition 2013 and they will be making layered desserts featuring meringue and they have five hours to bake. Paul said he is wanting to see something that he would be proud to put his name on.
Brian normally talks about wanting to be the Star Baker and today he just wants to survive after his last place finish in the Technical Bake. James is pretty sure this is the first recipe of the competition that he will not finish.
They have ten minutes left and some of them need time in the fridge for the cakes to set, but Brian decides to decorate his cake top while in the fridge with the door open and Francine is not happy! Why is Brian so stupid and self-centered?
The time is running out and James is ashamed about his cake, but the time runs out and here we go with the judging!
For Effie, they said the presentation is gorgeous and they like the flavors a lot. For Darlene, Paul said he was afraid when he saw the cake because it looks like fingers around the cake, but Marcela said it was a meringue creation to her. For Elaine, Marcela said it was too simple and it was a chance to blow their minds. For Francine, it is messy and because she couldn’t let it cool properly. For Brian, they said all the nuts are bad and this is not a multi-layered meringue showstopper. For James, they said it looks like it has been dropped from the seventh floor and it is dry and all of the components are off!
The American Baking Competition judges 2013 discuss all the bakers and who wins Star Baker and who goes home. The Star Baker on American Baking Competition 2013 is Darlene again! The baker who was eliminated on The American Baking Competition 2013 tonight was Effie! I am so not happy. Brian sucked on all three bakes, but Effie did amazingly well on the Showstopper….ugh!
What do you think of the judges’ choices tonight???
