American Baking Competition 2013 Recap: Episode 3 – Cake Time
| June 12, 2013 at 10:44 PM EDTIt is another night of baking challenges on the American Baking Competition 2013 and the eight remaining amateur bakers will be taking on cakes tonight on The American Baking Competition Season 1! The amateur bakers took on pies during the premiere and cookies last week on American Baking Competition 2013 on CBS and now the cakes come out to play! Find out who went home on The American Baking Competition 2013 tonight during our American Baking Competition 2013 recap that follows!
A look back at last week’s episode, which saw Whitney head home. We start tonight’s episode and Kolette is still worried about presentation. For the Signature Bake, they have to make the best single-layered cake in 90 minutes. As soon as they start baking, the wind picks up and things get windy in the kitchen on The American Baking Competition 2013.
We look at Jeremy a little bit more, so does that mean he is going home? He is making his mother-in-law’s Cinnamon Chocolate Cake. Elaine is making a childhood favorite, Pineapple Upside Down Cake with Coconut. She was the Star Baker last week on American Baking Competition Season 1, so the pressure is on her. This was something Paul Hollywood grew up with, so the pressure is on again for Elaine to impress Paul!
Francine is making Cherry Soda Pop Cake and uses a fish bait in place of vanilla extract! WHAT?!?! Kolette is making Oatmeal Spice Cake with Cinnamon. Jeff Foxworthy said that since it has oatmeal he can eat this for breakfast, right???
Thirty minutes until they present their cakes, so the amateur bakers are all watching the oven big time! Jeremy is freaking out about time management, yet again! The cakes are coming out of the oven and the bakers are flipping them out of the pans and screams are happening in joy! Everyone seems to be very happy with their cakes, but now they must top the cakes for presentation! One thing is certain on American Baking Competition 2013 tonight: Jeff Foxworthy is very excited to taste these cakes!
For Elaine, Marcela Valladolid said they needed a higher cake, but Paul said it is very British and good. For Kolette, Paul said it is too wet and borderline raw and Marcela said if she baked it properly then she would have forgiven the presentation. For Brian, he puts flowers on his cake that are inedible, so the judges hate that and Marcela said the cake is bland. For Darlene, Marcela said it was delicious. James overbaked his cake and not his best. Paul said well done to Effie. For Jeremy, Paul said it is very warm and he needs to work his time management. For Francine, Paul said it looks great, but it does not taste good and Marcela said too sweet.
The amateur bakers on The American Baking Competition on CBS are all not happy with their Signature Bake and know they have to step it up for the Technical Bake.
For the Technical Bake, they will make a Orange Chiffon Cake with a Tequila Orange Glaze. They all get the proper ingredients, but not how much of anything to use. The recipe will have missing directions and they have to figure it out! This is, of course, a recipe from Marcela Valladolid on The American Baking Competition 2013!
It seems none of them have made a chiffon cake in their lives, so they are all nervous about this one. Does Brian annoy anyone else out there? No times given on the recipe, so how long do they leave it in? We have a fire in the kitchen, as Francine’s oven is smoking! It is just oil on the bottom, but she does not want a smoky cake! Effie has never drank, so not sure how much tequila to use!
They are taking the cakes out of the pan and everyone seems happy, but Brian brings out a very lopsided cake and I love it! However, he gives himself an A. Would you? The time runs out and they bring up their cakes and the judges come back in to taste what they have done.
For Kolette, Marcela said she does not like it and it is too moist. They like the texture on Jeremy’s cake. Effie’s cake is overbaked. Paul likes the flavor of Elaine’s. Darlene’s is very dense because it was not cooled properly. They like the height on Francine’s cake and marcela thinks it is lovely. Marcela like the texture on James’ cake.
The rank, from worst to best: Kolette, Effie, Jeremy, Brian, Darlene, Elaine, James and Francine is the winner! She came back strong from her bad Signature Bake. Can she win Star Baker again on The American Baking Competition 2013.
Time for the Showstopper Bake on The American Baking Competition on CBS and it is a “Surprise Inside Cake,” which when cut into the cake will reveal some kind of surprise!
Effie’s cake will reveal a moon and stars inside. Jeremy’s cake will reveal a cherry pie inside!!! He said it is going to be spectacular or he will crash and burn. Brian’s cake will reveal a cheeseburger! Francine’s cake will reveal chickens and hearts.
The cakes are coming out the oven and the top part is not done on Jeremy’s cake and he is not happy. Kolette is using a super rich frosting. Francine cannot get her cake to cool down, so he frosting is a mess. The time is up and here we go with the judging.
For James, Paul said it is a great looking cake and Marcela said this is something that her son would love. Paul said the layers are great, but it is overbaked. For Francine, Paul thought the cake was decorated by a five-year-old and Marcela thinks the inside is great, but the top is too much. For Brian, Paul said the sponge is nice but it is too simplistic, but Marcela liked it. For Effie, Marcela said the presentation is beautiful but Paul said there is no strong flavor coming through. For Darlene, the presentation is not good and there is way too much rum in it. For Elaine, Marcela thinks it is presented well and she loves the taste and Paul thinks the appearance is superb. For Jeremy, the cherry pie did not work out too well and he is not happy but the judges liked his effort. For Effie, they liked it and loved the inside of it.
The judges discuss all the cakes and bakes this week on The American Baking Competition 2013 and the Star Baker this week is Elaine, for the second week in a row! The amateur baker that is sent home tonight on The American Baking Competition Season 1 is Jeremy. They were impressed, but his timing issues are too much for the judges.
