American Baking Competition 2013 Recap: Episode 2 – Cookie Time
| June 5, 2013 at 10:52 PM EDTWe started out with pies during the American Baking Competition 2013 premiere last week and now it is time for the nine remaining amateur bakers to take on cookies tonight on The American Baking Competition Season 1! The amateur bakers are put to three challenges every week on The American Baking Competition on CBS and will all revolve around making cookies this week. I loved the premiere and hope Episode 2 does not disappoint. Check out our American Baking Competition 2013 Recap below and see who was sent home on The American Baking Competition 2013 tonight!
The amateur bakers head back to the kitchen and Jeremy is feeling pressure of staying off the bottom this week and Francine wants to remain the Star Baker.
The first challenge is the Signature Bake and they will bake one of their favorite recipes. They must make a dozen cookies and all the cookies they make must be presented to judges Marcela Valladolid and Paul Hollywood. Jeff Foxworthy is back as host and bringing out the jokes.
Francine is making some “slap yo mama” cookies, which she has to explain to Paul what that means. Elaine is making Ginger cookies, which is a family favorite of Paul and he puts the pressure on her. James is making “ugly, but good” cookies. Francine is putting some cayenne pepper in her cookies! The judges tell Jeremy to make sure he finishes this time on American Baking Competition Season 1.
Brian is not happy with his first batch, so he starts some more. He must present the bad cookies as well, so that is not a good thing for him!
Whitney added more lemon juice to give it more flavor, but now the extra lemon juice is screwing up her cookies! Kolette is making White Chocolate Macadamia Nut cookies, which are her mother’s favorite.
The time is up on The American Baking Competition 2013 and time to taste the cookies. For Kolette, Paul said he really likes them, but they look very inconsistent. For Effie, Marcela said beautiful and she loves the texture. For James, Paul said he had a good eye for flavor and it works. For Darlene, Marcela said it is too crumbly and she would need a huge glass of milk to eat them. For Jeremy, Paul said well done and way to get it done in time. For Elaine, Paul said they do look like his Mom’s and they smell great and he tastes them and he is getting homesick! For Brian, Marcela said it is slightly undercooked in the middle. He does not bring out the bad cookies, which the judges find and bring them out. For Francine, Paul said it is a complex cookie and he likes that. For Whitney, Paul said the mix is too wet. Marcela said it is a flat cake.
The next challenge on American Baking Competition 2013 is the Technical Bake and the judges will not be present while they bake. The amateur bakers will be making sophisticated S’mores and it is Marcela’s recipe! They have 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete it. They are given the ingredients, but some of the directions are missing in the recipe!
Whitney added too much butter and is having issues. Kolette is trying to make hers all uniform. Francine talks about shooting deer and being an outdoors kind of girl, but a baker too. The bakers are all trying to make the homemade marshmallows and Jeff Foxworthy said they have time to run to the store and buy some! Brian is not happy with his marshmallows, but Effie likes hers.
Brian has liquid marshmallows and burnt cookies, so it is a flop for him. The time runs out and they bring their S’mores to the table and the judges come in.
For Francine, Marcela liked that they all looked the same and likes the flavor of the marshmallow and is a good cookie. They said James’ look like a witches hat. They say Brian’s are very thin and the marshmallow is very poor. They say Kolette’s chocolate is not good, but they like the flavors. They think Jeremy’s look like dog poo! They think Effie’s look like what they are looking for. Whitney has a bad ratio and the graham cracker is slightly undercooked.
The judges rank them from worst to best: James, Brian, Elaine, Darlene, Jeremy, Whitney, Kolette, Francine and Effie is number one and the judges loved it!
Time for the Show Stopper on The American Baking Competition 2013. They will be tackling the french macaroon. They have to make 40 sandwiched macaroons and have two different types! They have four hours to bake. Paul said they are looking for great flavors and uniformity, but most important is time management.
Effie said she is using curry, which Paul is excited to taste because he is a huge curry fan. Whitney has always struggled with macaroons, so she is nervous. James is sketching out the size of his macaroons, so they are all the same size. Kolette is working big time on the uniformity, since she is always given a hard time about that. Brian wants to redeem himself from the technical bake on The American Baking Competition on CBS.
Marcela said an issue with macaroons is cracking and that is if the oven temperature is off. Francine is struggling and said this might be the bake that sends her home. Paul said all of the flavor for a macaroon comes from the filling, so that is crucial. The time runs up and none of them are looking excited about this bake!
Time for Paul and Marcela to taste the final bake. For James, Marcela said it is too perfumey for her, but Paul likes the flavor. For Jeremy, Marcela said the chocolate looks quite perfect and well done. For Whitney, Marcela said everything that makes a macaroon a macaroon is missing and it is rough all around. For Brian, they said the flavor is nice, but he did not let them dry out and they turn to mush. For Darlene, they said they are pretty bland. For Francine, they said they look slightly undercooked and moist in the center, but the filling needs to be more delicate. For Elaine, they thought she nailed it. For Effie, Marcela said curry has no place in a macaroon. For Kolette, she said she is disappointed in herself. Paul said it needs flavor, but Marcela said the filling was good.
Time for Paul and Marcela to decide who is the Star Baker for the week and who is going home on The American Baking Competition 2013 tonight. The Star Baker this week is Elaine! After all three challenges tonight, the amateur baker eliminated tonight on American Baking Competition Season 1 is Whitney. Do you agree with the judges’ choice?
