Top Chef Duels 2014 Recap: Week 2 – Who Won The Duel Tonight?

Not only do we have another matchup on Top Chef Duels 2014 tonight, we also have P!nk making her way onto the show, which has me ecstatic. I am a huge fan of cooking shows and a huge fan of Pink, so this is the perfect combination for me tonight on Top Chef Duels Season 1. Tonight will feature Brooke Williamson against Shirley Chung, but only the best woman can survive and move on to the Top Chef Duels finale and compete for that $100,000 prize! Last week on Top Chef Duels 2014, it was Richard Blais versus Marcel Vigneron. This was the first real duel we got to see, so it was interesting to see how it would play out. They each got to bring a dish to make, which they thought would trip the other chef up. However, both of the chefs lost the battle with their own dish! From there, the final battle was done and the judges picked Richard as the winner and he moved on to the finale!

Here we go…we see Curtis Stone, Gail Simmons and Wolfgang Puck, Tonight’s battle will be between Shirley and Brooke. They draw knives and Brooke wins, so she picks to have Shirley go first. Let’s get to these challenges!

CHALLENGE 1: For Shirley’s challenge, she is picking the crazy shellfish challenge and is so confident, so she is letting Brooke pick the shellfish between abalone, razor clam and geoduck. Brooke picks geoduck. Shirley is surprised Brooke picked the hardest one, but loves that she has balls. They have 30 minutes to create their dish, so Brooke is making a cold salad and Shirley is going for the warm salad.

TASTING: For Shirley, they said the flavors work well together and say it is a beautiful dish. It tasted like it had a Chinese background to it. Wolfgang wanted more acidity and more color. For Brooke, Curtis likes the combination of the dish. Wolfgang wants some white wine with it! He likes the way the dish looks, but wanted some more geoduck.

RESULTS: In a 2-1 vote, Brooke is the winner and wins $10,000.

CHALLENGE 2: For Brooke’s challenge, she knows Shirley is not a fan of making pastries, so she is having them make a vegan dessert! This is Brooke’s style and how she eats, so she is playing to her strengths right now. Shirley makes savory vegan dishes, but not desserts.

TASTING: For Brooke, Wolfgang liked the touch of spice she put in it. Gail said it had such great contrast. Curtis said the frangelica might be a tad strong. For Shirley, Wolfgang thought it was a great Asian dessert and loved the contrast of the green tea and passion fruit. Gail wanted it to be more thicker, but balanced. Gail said they were the best two desserts they have ever had on Top Chef.

RESULTS: In a 2-1 vote, Brooke wins again and is taking home $20,000 tonight!

THE DUEL: They will create a three-course meal inspired by life under the big top! A circus-themed meal? First course, they need to create a dish to be served tableside. Second course, create a three element entree. Third course, create a dessert standing at least six inches off the plate on Top Chef Duels 2014! They will be joined at the table tonight by P!nk! They also have to create an incredible drink pairing for one of the dishes and they have their teams present to help with this challenge. They have four hours to create their dishes.

They both get started on the dishes and it looks like they both will be pouring broth on their dishes as the tableside service. Pink and Curtis come in and I just love this woman and she is so beautiful. The judges arrive and it is time for the tasting of these dishes!

FIRST COURSE: For Brooke, they loved the flavor of the cocktail and it paired well with the dish. It has beautiful flavor, but the mussel was cold. Wolfgang said it was not hot or cold. For Shirley, For Shirley, Pink said the mint is amazing. Wolfgang said it is spicy and Gail loved that they had to get involved and mix it up.

SECOND COURSE: For Shirley, Curtis said it is a refreshing cocktail. Curtis doesn’t want to walk through a dish. Wolfgang wanted the chicken skin to be gone. For Brooke, Pink said this is her new favorite thing. They said it tastes delicious. Wolfgang liked the flavors of it.

THIRD COURSE: They did both get the dish over six inches high on Top Chef Duels 2014. For Brooke, Curtis said it is a beautiful dessert. Gail said the rhubarb and chocolate played off each other. For Shirley, they loved the flavor in the ice cream and she was smart for putting the brown sugar from melting.

RESULTS: The diners discussed all the meals and the winner of The Duel is Shirley, so she redeemed herself from losing the two challenges! She moves on to the finale and Brooke goes to the Knockout for a chance to get a spot in the finale and will take on Marcel Vigneron, but she still leaves with $20,000 tonight!
