Top Chef Duels 2014 Recap: Premiere – Who Got Eliminated?

Some of our favorite (and least favorite) chefs from previous seasons of Top Chef are back for a new competition on Bravo: Top Chef Duels 2014 and it should be bringing some intense battles between these culinary favorites. Curtis Stone will host Top Chef Duels Season 1 and it will pit chefs against each other and showcase some of their weaknesses. For an idea of how Top Chef Duels 2014 works, here you go: “In each episode, two chefs will face-off in three rounds of head-to-head battles testing their skill, creativity and speed. Rivalries will be intensified as Top Chef Duels ups the ante and allows the competing chefs to each pick one mini-duel based on the other’s perceived weaknesses in the kitchen. The third and final challenge of each episode will decide who moves on to compete in the ultimate high-stakes season finale where 10 chefs will be confronted with split second decisions as they lay it all on the line in the greatest challenge of their careers. In the end, only one chef will earn bragging rights and win the $100,000 grand prize and a culinary adventure that will be featured in Food and Wine Magazine.”

Here we go…we start the night with Curtis Stone, Gail Simmons and Wolfgang Puck, who will be the judges tonight. The duel tonight is between Richard Blais and Marcel Vigneron. Marcel lost to Richard during All Stars, so he is wanting to redeem himself tonight. They both have crafted a challenge they think they can win and each is worth $10,000. The final duel will get the winner to the finale and a chance at $100,000. They draw knives and Marcel picks to go first with his challenge.

CHALLENGE 1: For Marcel’s challenge, the chefs will have to create a dish that has both a hot and cold component to it and he is not talking about flavors/tastes about it. This will also be a sweet challenge and not a savory dish. They have 30 minutes to create their dish. They both get started and it looks like Richard is having an easier time with this than Marcel is at his own challenge! However, Richard does think his dish is a little busy.

TASTING: For Marcel, Curtis likes the ice cream. Wolfgang wasn’t sure what the cashew cake even was. Gail said she is obsessed with the ice cream. They loved the ice cream, but the cake did not impress them. For Richard, Curtis said there is so much going on there. There were a lot of elements of the dish and not sure what was hot and what was cold. Gail said she did not see the heat in the dish.

RESULTS: In a 2-1 vote, Richard wins and he wins $10,000 on Top Chef Duels 2014!

CHALLENGE 2: For Richard’s dish, the chefs will create the best hamburger and side dish. Richard makes this everywhere and it is on all his menus. Richard is going to go old school with this burger, but do enough to give it an edge. He thinks Marcel goes to the edge with cooking and it might hurt him here. Marcel is using an egg on top of his burger, which Richard thinks is old news.

TASTING: For Richard, they like the ketchup. They wanted the bacon to be more crispy. For Marcel, Gail said it is daunting. The burger is huge and Wolfgang said he is going to have to take a shower after that. He said the avocado is good and the egg adds to it. Curtis thought it was too thick.

RESULTS: They loved Marcel’s burger and he is the winner and wins $10,000

THE DUEL: They are two of the most creative chefs to enter the kitchen on Top Chef, so they will create a meal that will play to the judges’ sense. For first course, it should be visually misleading (look like one thing and taste completely different). For the second course, the judges will be blindfolded and they have to create an aromatic dish. For the final course, they have to create a dish with varying textures to play to their sense of touch. They each have their own sues chefs to help them out and have two hours to create their dishes.

Marcel seems to be talking down to his chefs, which Richard calls him out on. He said he is actually a sweetheart. The judges arrive and get ready for the dishes and the time runs out!

DISH 1: For Marcel, they said it is not what you would expect from what it looks like. For Richard, they said the chicken liver had a beautiful texture. The flavors are balanced and it was perfect.

DISH 2: The judges on Top Chef Duels 2014 put on their blindfolds and here we go! For Marcel, they seem to be loving the smell of the dish. He adds a second smell in the middle of the dish and the judges seem to be loving it. They think the flavors are fantastic and brings you to a different place. For Richard, the judges had some positives to say about the dish, but more bad comments than good!

FINAL DISH: For Marcel, they said it is visually stunning and the flavors are nice and refreshing. For Richard, Wolfgang said it is a challenge for his teeth. Curtis said two great desserts to top off two great meals.

Afterwards, Richard is feeling defeated and thinks Marcel is a great chef. The judges discuss the different dishes while Marcel got great comments, it seems like they are liking Richard’s dishes more. Who do you think will win?

RESULTS: They said it was an amazing meal from both of them, but the winner of this duel tonight is Richard! That means Marcel is eliminated.
