Top Chef - Season 11

Last time on Top Chef Season 11, the chefs headed back to college and had to create cafeteria-style food for incoming freshmen at Louisiana State University. They even stayed in the college dorms and were giving it the college try, but that failed on the ears of Justin, who tried to go too big with his dish and ended up with a bland dish that the students did not enjoy. He was eliminated and headed to Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen to take on Louis.

Who goes home tonight on Top Chef 2014? Find out in our Live Recap that follows!

We start the show seeing Stephanie make a phone call to her boyfriend, so does this mean Stephanie is going home tonight? She tells him she is doing well this season, so foreshadowing her elimination??? Nick is still angry Carlos lied to the judges about him stealing his oven, but is going to be a gentleman about it.

The chefs head to the kitchen to meet Padma Lakshmi and guest judge John Besh. They are surrounded by crawfish and will be making a crawfish etouffee. They will put their twist on the dish and have 45 minutes and the winner gets immunity for this Quickfire Challenge. Stephanie is allergic to shellfish, so they are prepared to give her shots if she has a reaction! Since she can’t taste her dish, Nick is being nice and helping her out with this challenge because he feels she is like a little sister to him. The chefs are racing to finish their plates. Shirley is the only one to use rice in her dish, so she is worried.

The time runs out on Top Chef 2014 and the judges taste the dishes. They are supposed to smother something, but Carlos did not and Padma calls him out on it. The least favorite dishes were from Carrie (flavors really muddled), Nick (wasn’t etouffee they were looking for) and Stephanie (more of a soup than an etouffee) and same for Carlos. The favorites were Brian (luscious sauce), Nina and Shirley. Yet again, the winner of the Quickfire Challenge is Shirley! She will be immune tonight.

Elimination Challenge: the local chefs will be throwing a party the next day and these chefs will be serving the food! Each chef is cooking dishes using two different types of seafood. They have three hours to prep before the event happens.

Before the next day, the chefs all head to John Besh’s house for a dinner night. How great to get some Louisiana food from a chef that grew up on it! They enjoy a great dinner and get some great advice from John Besh on Top Chef New Orleans 2014.

The next day arrives and the chefs head out to get things started on their dishes. They have three hours to cook and rush to the trucks to grab their two types of seafood. Shirley is making a cold dish, which is the first time she has done that this season. Carrie said she works with seafood a lot, so she is feeling confident. She is making a flounder fritter, which Shirley thinks is not highlighting the flounder. Nick, of course, is taking on a lot with his dish and worried about time. Carlos is making a sushi dish and doesn’t have a sharp enough knife to cut it! He asks to borrow Nick’s knife, but he only has one and would never give it to him anyway….drama!

Nick does not want to be a dick about it, even though Carlos has been an ass lately, he lets Carlos use the knife and shows he is a good guy. Nina is worried she made her dish too complex and might be going home. Carlos is running out of time and his fish is not caught, so he cuts it in half and will probably be called out for different size portions on Top Chef Season 11.

The guests and judges arrive and the food is being served. Stephanie has a huge line, but she did not think of plating when she created her dish. The judges said Brian did a great job cooking the fish and it is delicious. They said Nick’s dish is advanced and technical, but not exciting and needs more acid. For Carrie, they said the flavors are good, but why do a fritter for the fish? For Shirley, they thought it was good and the flavors are great and she looked happy. For Nina, it was seared perfectly and the flavors are great. For Carlos, they said the fish is under-seasoned and the fish could be cut thicker and needs some acid. For Stephanie, they said the acid is good and the oyster is fresh and a really good dish.

Nick gets his knife back Carlos, who just left it on his table and did not clean it. He said it was crusted with fish and is pissed! Nina said a knife for a chef is huge and be respectful about it, so she would be pissed too. Is Nick overreacting about the knife on Top Chef 2014?

The chefs are in the holding room on Top Chef 2014 and time to hear what the judges have to say. They think the dishes were all good, but they wanted to see more of the seafood. They were disappointed with so many ceviche dishes, but Nina did very well. They also enjoyed Brian and Stephanie’s dishes. They couldn’t taste the fish from Carlos. Nicholas was flat with his dish. They said it could have been anything in Carrie’s fritter and they wanted to see more of the fish.

Padma comes in and the judges want to see Brian, Stephanie and Nina. Time for the Judges’ Table and these three chefs have the best dishes of the day on Top Chef New Orleans 2014. They all did a fabulous job, but the winner tonight is Stephanie! I guess it was the opposite from showcasing her more in the very beginning!

The judges now ask to see Nick, Carrie and Carlos, who happen to have the least favorite dishes of the day. They wanted more fish from Carlos and thought Carrie did not highlight the fish at all with her fritters. They think it was a texture issue with Nick’s dish. The judges discuss the three dishes and I think it will be Carlos going home since this was a first time in the bottom for Carrie and at least Nick highlighted the fish in his dish. Who do you think it will be?

The chefs are back on front of the judges on Top Chef 2014. The losing chef tonight is Carrie Mashaney, so I guess I was wrong, huh? She heads to Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen to take on Louis, who is holding his own and fighting for a spot in the finale!
