American Idol 2014 Spoilers - Top 5 Performances

This is a huge night, as the finalists can not make any mistakes, especially with only five contestants remaining. The American Idol judges 2014 (Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick, Jr.) will be calling them out on all their shortcomings, so they have to be as close to perfect as possible! We gave you the Top 5 performance theme earlier in the week, which looks like it could be another adventure for them. Weeks ago Ryan Seacrest asked America to tweet out song requests for the finalists to sing and they will finally take on those songs tonight for “America’s Request” tonight! The contestants had a short list of songs to pick from, so will it work out for them all?

Here we go…we see that Jason Mraz will be a mentor for the Top 5 tonight, which they are all excited about. Now let’s get to the performances!

Round 1

Alex Preston – He sings “Sweater Weather” by The Neighbourhood. Alex said he likes the song, but doesn’t want to change it too much because he has gotten some bad critiques on it. Jason gives him some tips on using the mic to extend his voice, which is cool to see. It was a good performance, but nothing too crazy for me. He does some fast, rapping in the middle and it works for him.

Caleb Johnson – He sings “Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” by Aerosmith. Jason said he has an iconic sound that is all his own. Caleb said this is an iconic song and Jason tells him to learn it from top to bottom and wants to see him open up and tell the story. America decided to slow it down for Caleb and I was not impressed. He hits some good notes and has some strong vocals, but I want him to rock out.

We have some trio performances tonight on American Idol 2014, as Jena, Alex and Sam take the stage to sing “Best Day Of My Life” by American Authors. These really do nothing for the votes, right? They are just for fun and it was cute, but I am over it!

Jessica Meuse – She sings “Human” by Christina Perri. She said this song is about getting torn down and building yourself up and she feels that has been her journey. Jason gives her some tips on how to hold the guitar and she is so happy to get the advice from him. I like Jessica, but I am torn on this one. She starts real rough and then the chorus kicks in and she nails it. Then it gets rough, but she ends strong. I am not sure of this song choice tonight!

Sam Woolf – He sings “Sing” by Ed Sheeran. He thinks America made a good choice with this song. It is a new song and he thinks he can put a little twist on it. Jason wants him to own it more and get funky. Let’s judge this based on the girls reactions in the crowd, as they just seemed to be standing there and clapping. It was alright, but he needs more experience and needs to go home!

Jena Irene – She sings “My Body” by Young the Giant. She is worried about moving around the stage and getting the crowd into it and losing the power of her vocals. I think this was a great song choice for her and she does well with it, but I do think that she overworked it with the crowd and her movements and lost the power in her vocals. She seemed out of breath at times and that is not a good thing!

Time for the duet of the night, as Caleb and Jessica take the stage to sing “Beast of Burden” by The Rolling Stones. It is fun and I like Jessica in these performances. She always seems more comfortable and having fun with it. Maybe she should be in a band?

Round 2

Alex Preston – He sings “Say Something” by A Great Big World. I love this song, but I think it is overdone. Alex & Sierra won The X Factor USA Season 3 and have a very similar style to Alex Preston. The sang it and nailed it, so I want him to be unique. He does a great job with it, which is a given. This is his style, but I’d rather hear him do his own songs with this same sound!

Alex Presto, “Say Something” ~ American Idol Top 5 by HumanSlinky

Jena Irene – She sings “Valerie” by Amy Winehouse. I am a fan of this song and intrigued to hear Jena take on an Amy Winehouse song. Decent vocals, but I think I was expecting a little bit more from her on this song. Amy had such a unique voice and I wanted Jena to show off her voice with this one.

Sam Woolf – He sings “How To Save A Life” by The Fray. I think I have said this plenty of times about Sam, but I think he has a good voice. He is young and has shown some growth this season, but there is nothing special about him. He is a good singer, but I don’t see a star when I look at him on American Idol 2014. I don’t get goosebumps when he performs and I feel I should for someone to win this show.

Jessica Meuse – She sings “Summertime Sadness” by Lana del Ray. This one started with so much potential for me. She was sitting down and giving us her pose. She looked amazing and sounded good. She then got up and seemed to lose it. The song kicked it, but she just sang. Move with that beat and feel it.

Jessica Meuse, “Summertime Sadness” ~ American… by HumanSlinky

Caleb Johnson – He sings “Still Of The Night” by Whitesnakee. To be honest, I was not sure what this song was. Then Caleb started singing and it came to me. This was a great song choice for Caleb and he does such a good job with it. This is the rocker side of Caleb that I enjoy and what I want to hear him singing. Great end to the night!
